Online Flight Simulators are influenced by arcade developments

By Clare Johnson

Originally, the many PC flight simulator games which are available today, were created for consoles. Some were distributed to the arcades. It is believed, however, that the majority were created with the PC in mind.

This niche is popular all around the world and one of the most popular games is Landing High Japan by Taito. This was originally designed as a cabinet game. People who are aware of this game are hopeful that Taito will create an online flight simulator. When they produced Landing High Japan, it was very surreal and featured real life airports and maps of Kansai, Haneda, Hiroshima, Shin-Chitose and Fukuoka.

Players were able to choose from five aeroplanes and if they chose to make the game more real, they could press a button and allow speech. Each of the planes were designed based on real planes and allowed users to fly with All Nippon Airways. This game had the potential of being an excellent flight simulator online.

Taito revived the arcade title, Midnight Landing, from 1987, by releasing to the arcades, Top Landing in 1988. This game was also based on flight simulation and consisted of similar game play.

In 1999, Taito released their last but one arcade game. They appeared to be waiting for the Power PC603e microprocessor, which was needed to run the game proficiently. Flight simulator users are waiting patiently for them to release an internet version. Google has developed its own version of a flight simulator which you may want to check into.

While the Google flight simulator may not be one of the best flight simulators on the market, it can be a decent way to waste some time. Google Earth contains an Easter egg. By pressing Ctrl+Alt+A, or some other similar key combination, players can access the Google flight simulator and take a few trips around the world. Virtual pilots can usually choose between the Cirrus SR22 utility plane and the F16 Viper. The real maps add a certain level of class to the simulator.

Google's software is pretty popular, although employers are not happy about its release as their employees are often found trying it out at work when they are supposed to be working. If you are serious about your flight simulator software, you may want to look at obtaining a more advanced version of this type of software.

There is a popular game by Sentou Yousei Yukikaze, entitled Yousei no Mau Sora, which flight simulator fans hope will be released online. This game was created for Xbox and eventually joined other Japanese PC flight simulators. The best part was that this game was based alongside the anime series, although unfortunately, it was not released in North America. The reason for this is unknown as Anime and Manga have become well-known outside of Japan. Perhaps niche games of this sort may not be popular elsewhere.
